From climate targets to investment: Side Event at SB64 on climate finance for small island states
23/06/2026
On 11 June 2026, Sustainalogue e.V. and the Government of Niue hosted the event “Mobilizing Climate Investment in Small Island States – From NDC 3.0 Plans to Finance” during the Bonn Climate Change Conference (SB 64). With contributions from the Pacific Community (SPC), the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT), and the greenwerk., participants discussed how small island states can translate their climate targets into concrete investments.
A key takeaway was that NDC investment plans can bridge the gap between national climate targets and individual projects. They make financing needs visible, identify investment opportunities, and help governments mobilise public and private finance more strategically.
The discussion also highlighted that investment planning should not begin only after an NDC has been adopted. Information about implementation costs, available sources of finance, and the conditions attached to different financing instruments should inform the development of national climate commitments from the outset.
The event underscored that aligning climate policy, implementation planning, and finance from the beginning results in NDCs that are not only ambitious but also realistic and implementable. Particularly for small island states, strategic investment plans are an important tool for translating climate targets into financed action.

Sustainalogue e.V. at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan
27/11/2024
Sustainalogue e.V. attended the UN Climate Change Conference COP29 in Baku as a civil society observer. We followed developments in the international climate negotiations, participated in side events on climate finance and climate policy, and connected with other civil society organizations.
A particular focus at COP29 was the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (NCQG). This new global climate finance goal replaces the previous USD 100 billion target and aims to increase financial support for climate action in developing countries. At COP29, countries agreed to provide at least USD 300 billion annually by 2035 and to work towards mobilizing USD 1.3 trillion per year from public and private sources. While this is a good progress, how this support will be mobilized remains uncertain. What is clear: globally, we need to invest much more into climate solutions to keep global warming to well below 2°C!
Sustainalogue e.V. at COP28 in Dubai
07/12/2023
Sustainalogue e.V. attended COP28 in Dubai, following the international climate negotiations and engaging with representatives from civil society, governments, and the climate policy community.
A major milestone was the operationalisation of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, which had been established at COP27. “Loss and damage” refers to the harm caused by climate impacts that cannot be avoided through mitigation or adaptation measures. For example, this icnludes the destruction of homes and livelihoods, the loss of ecosystems and cultural heritage, or displacement caused by extreme weather and slow-onset events. The fund is intended to support particularly vulnerable developing countries in responding to these impacts.
Sustainalogue also contributed its expertise to several COP28 side events, with team members participating as experts in panel discussions on climate finance and international climate policy.

Among the ideas discussed, was an informative platform for (young) people interested to work in the field of sustainability, to create an internship exchange programme for students from the Global South and to strengthen cooperation with educational institutions, for example schools, to develop and implement workshops. In addition, the idea was raised to participate in local civil society events, such as Hamburger Klimawoche.
Against the background of COVID-19 regulations, the brainstormed ideas were collected and documented in order to pursue them once the regulations for public engagement will be lifted.
